‘Bust’

Oil Pastel
on ripped cardboard

Made
2024

Bust was a rough drawing of a bust in my bedroom, using a limited blue palette comprised of various shades of blue. I chose the blue to compliment the cardboard packaging and kept the piece simple with areas untouched to allow the complex structure of the cardboards’ surface to show through. The lips were overworked and I ended up denting the surface of the cardboard, trying to get their shape correct. I liked the experience on working with a material that fought back; it was difficult to get their oil pastel to stick and look opaque, which ended up looking more interesting with the faster looking marks moving in different directions as I pressed harder into the surface of the cardboard. Very interesting.
